PhD Project: The impact of plant-based proteins on markers of gut, metabolic and mental health

My research investigates the impact of plant-based proteins on markers of gut, metabolic, and mental health. While plant-based proteins are known for their lower climate impact compared to animal proteins, there is still a need for detailed scientific knowledge about their health effects. My project focuses on colonic protein fermentation and its effects on microbiota composition, gut markers, and metabolites.

The aim is to identify factors influencing protein digestibility, explore nutrient interactions during fermentation in the colon, and understand the underlying metabolic mechanisms. This PhD project is part of the PAN Sweden Research Centre, with the long-term goal of developing sustainably produced products that offer health benefits for everyone.

About me

My name is Annalena Kamm. I completed my Bachelor and Master studies in Nutritional Sciences at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany.

My interest in the human gut microbiota led me to Sweden in August 2020, where I wrote my Master’s thesis at the Nutrition-Gut-Brain Interactions Research Centre at Örebro University. Following this, I undertook a research-assistant internship.

Since June 2021, I have been a PhD student in Medical Sciences at Örebro University within the PAN Sweden initiative.
