Research aimed at creating a more sustainable and healthy food chain through innovation and long-term sustainability

Food Science Sweden’s Focus Areas

Our member organisations all conduct research aimed at creating a more sustainable and healthy food system through innovation and long-term sustainability.

  • Sustainable food production: We work to reduce the environmental footprint of food production by improving existing food production systems in the different value chains and developing new food products to reduce emissions and land use. We are exploring new sustainable food sources, including plant-based, marine, insects, and cellular agriculture.
  • Promoting public health: We investigate the nutritional impact of foods and how dietary choices can reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity. Our researchers develop novel nutritious and tasty foods to make them more attractive to consumers.
  • Food security and resilience: Focusing on ensuring sustainable access to nutritious food despite changing growing conditions, we develop crops that are more resistant to drought, diseases, and other environmental challenges. •
  • Circular economy and waste reduction: We promote a circular economy by recycling by-products from food production and converting them into new products, such as new protein sources or inputs for food production. •
  • Innovation and economic growth: By developing new, competitive products and technologies, we contribute to economic growth and create green jobs within the bioeconomy, in line with sustainability goals.
  • Global food security and fairness: We work for the fair distribution of resources and access to nutritious food globally. By developing plant-based foods that can be grown locally with minimal resources, we strengthen food security in vulnerable regions and reduce dependence on imported foods.

Industry-related research through the national graduate school LiFT

The LiFT graduate school is run by Food Science Sweden, and through it, we help provide the industry, academia, and government agencies with future leaders in research and development in the food sector. LiFT meets the industry’s needs through high-quality doctoral education, industry-adapted courses, and mentoring programmes, creating an important network for academics in the food science sector.

Our member organisations

Our member organisations today are Chalmers, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Lund University of Technology (LTH), the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Örebro University (OrU), and the Swedish research institute RISE. The industry is represented by the Food Companies (Li).
